T810862 Sharaku Toshusai [Memorial Portrait of Actor Ichikawa Monnosuke II (1743-1794)] The crest on the chest with triple squares and the Japanese character "mon" identifies the actor as Ichikawa Monnosuki II. The female impersonator has been consistently identified as Nakamura Tomijuro but the King of the Underworld has been identified variously as Nakajima Kanzayemon III, Nakajima Mioemon, and Nakajima Sanboemon II (1783). This print is believed to be in conjunction with the commemorative print featuring two Kabuki actors dressed as the King of the Underworld and a female in distress. The series incorporate deceased Kabuki actors performing a scene from the play Shibaraku, one of the most popular Kabuki numbers. Woodcut/color 20th century impression of the 1794-95 original Japan I: 12 7/16" x 8 3/8" P: 12 11/16" x 9" F(m): 20 3/16" x 15 15/16" Aiban Fl. 1794-1795 (died 1801?)

T850036 Shigenobu Nishimura [Kabuki Actor Ogino Isaburo (1703-1748) in the Role of Shinozuka Goro] The actor's crest (consisting of a large circle with three overlapping pairs of parallel lines arranged in a triangle) appears between his knees. His name is given on the left of the print by the barrel next to his right leg. The medallion upon the figure's chest contains the Chinese character (kanji) for 'shino' (standing for Shinozuka). Woodcut/handcolored (2 color) Specifically, this is an urushi-e (lacquer picture), a variation of early ukiyo-e prints, using a single woodblock and monochrome sumi-ink (a technique known as sumizuri) mixed with urushi to emphasize the pitch blackeffect. Then colors tan/beni (red pigment from plants), yellow and green are applied by hand. Metallic specks on the shin, wrist guards and under armor padding near the neck and rope belt are most likely copper-infused bronze that was used as a special gold pigment in a lacquer medium. 1740s Japan I: 12 1/4" x 5 3/4" P: 13 3/16" x 6 1/8" F(m): 21 1/4" x13 1/2" Hosoban Fl. 1730-1740s

T860053 Shotei II (Known as) Takahashi Hiroaki "Izumi Hashi no Ame" (Night Rain at Izumi Bridge) This bridge in Tokyo was named after Princess Izumi who wrote books similar to the "Tale of Ganji". This is from a series of post-earthquake (1923) prints. Woodcut/color Post-earthquake (1923) Japan I: 6 1/2" x 14 13/16" P: 6 11/16" x 15" F(m): 13 13/16" x 21 1/2" Mitzugiri-ban 1871-1945
T860055 Shotei II (Known as) Takahashi Hiroaki Upper left: "Tsukuda no Yoru Ami" (Net Fishing at Tsukudajima at Night) Tsukudajima is located in Tokyo bay, and played an important role in the japanese fishing economy during the 1930s. This print is probably a redesign of the original (1920-1930) which was destroyed by the great earthquake of 1923. Woodcut/color c. 1936 Japan I: 14 1/2" x 6 9/16" P: 14 1/2" x 6 5/8" F(m): 21 7/16" x 13 1/16" Mitzugiri-ban 1871-1945
T860056 Shotei II (Known as) Takahashi Hiroaki "Yoru no Shinagawa" (Evening at Shinagawa) appears at lower left. Shinagawa was the first stop on the fifty-three stages of the Tokaido Highway between Edo (Tokyo) and Kyoto in the Edo period (1600-1868). These stages offered lodging, eateries and other establishments especially catering to travelers, as are also seen in many of Hiroshige series of the same highway in the traditional ukiyo-e prints. In our Shotei image, it is evening and two street musicians are shown walking down the road while other people go about their business. The male singer is in the front, holding a lantern and sheet music, while the female musician follows playing a shamisen (a three-stringed traditional Japanese instrument frequently used as accompaniment to singing and reciting or by itself for instrumental pieces often combined with drums and flutes). The rich hues (with blue graded down to orange to suggest the last glow of the setting sun) of the post-dusk sky with the prominent crescent moon contrast sharply against the silhouetted buildings that line the roadway. Linear perspective is utilized to create a sense of depth within the print. Many of the ukiyo-e prints depict a scene from everyday life, often in nocturnal and stormy settings. Shotei does this here, and works in the shin hanga aesthetic and continues the established values of the traditional ukiyo-e prints. T820064 Utamaro Kitagawa "Hyogo-ya uchi Tsukioka" (Courtesan Tsukioka of the Hyogo House) The courtesan is accompanied by her young "kamuro" (apprentice). On the upper left hand side of the print is the name of the brothel (Hyogo-ya) to which the courtesan belongs. The next line to the left gives the courtesan's name as Tsukioka. Additional subtitle inscriptions to the left of the courtesan's name are difficult to decipher due to damage, but may explain the scene as viewing chrysanthemum in autumn--"Aki no Kiku [mi]" (Autumn Chrysanthemum). Tsukioka wears an elaborate obi-sash tied in the front, a clear indication of her being a courtesan. The sash has a triple whirling comma-shaped pattern called "mitsu tomoe" or "mitsu domoe" representing water in general and the spirits of Shinto deities (this pattern is often associated with good luck). The apprentice's hair is decorated with flowers (plum?), an indication of her being in her early teens as a "kamuro" apprentice, attending this high-ranking courtesan Tsukioka. The full blooming chrysanthemum flowers in light tan and pink indicate the autumn season. Woodcut/color 1780-1790s? The lack of censorship seal and the delicate and exprssive lips of the courtesan may suggest this is an early work when Utamaro first began to design portraits of women. T850073 Yoshitoshi Tsukioka (his legal name was Tsukioka Yonejiro, but he was also known as "Taiso" (Great Rebirth) and Yonejiro. (The Heavy Basket), indicated by shaded pink and yellow block at the top right. This print illustrates a popular folk tale in Japan, in which a sparrow punishes a greedy old woman by giving her a basket of demons. Here, you see the wrinkled, contorted form of the old woman, naked from the waist up, screaming at the demons that erupt from a large basket on the right, all portrayed aginst a shaded grey background. The details of the scene are rich and typical of Yoshitoshi's style; one notices even the eyes drawn on the woven basket, further animating the subject matter. The central demon is Mitsune Kozo, also known from several other Japanese folk tales. The other three unnamed demons are excellent examples of the artist's vivid imagination and attention to form. Yoshitoshi's style can be summed up as detailed, richly colored scenes, using quick, calligraphic and sharp outlines, typical of his mature style (1880-1892). Yoshitoshi is considered the last great master of the traditional ukiyo-e woodblock style. Apprenticed to Kuniyoshi and age 11 in 1850, Yoshitoshi began his career depicting famous battle scenes, following his master's style of gruesome, bloody and morbid subjects. Yoshitoshi held a fascination with the morose and occult throughout his lifetime, and many works are devoted to those subjects. Despite suffering from depression, illness and poverty for much of his adult career, he was still able to achieve fame and recognition. Although considered an innovative and creative stylist, Yoshitoshi maintained tradional ties through subject matter and is remembered as a keeper of the ukiyo-e tradition. "Shinkei Sanzuroku Kaisen" (New Forms of Thirty-six Ghosts), indicated by white on black writing at top of print. Woodcut/color This type of print, using up to fifteen different colors, is called "nishiki-e", (brocade picture). 1892, written on bottom left margin. Note: This print was finished, cut and published posthumously by Yoshitoshi's associates, following his death in July 1892.
