Janet Turner Print Museum to Present "Between the Covers: Books and Portfolios" Exhibition March 10–April 16

Rare and exquisite artists' books, book illustrations and portfolios from the 15th though 21st centuries will be on display March 10 – April 16, 2010 at the Turner.

Museum curator Catherine Sullivan and bay area artist Art Hazelwood will talk about the importance of book and portfolio artistry Thursday, March 11 at 5:30 p.m. at the Turner. A reception will follow from 6-7:30 p.m. Both events are open to the public.

Art Hazelwood's relief portfolio "Pillars of Society" is on loan to the Turner for this special exhibit. Both an artist and independent exhibition curator, Hazelwood has participated in several Janet Turner National Print Competitions and juried a Janet Turner Student Printmaking Exhibition.

Examples of book pages, broadsheets (single sheets) and hand done manuscripts will adorn the Turner walls. Included are a Michael Wolgemut (1434 -1519) page with text, a hand colored stencil from the ‘Nuremberg Chronicles', Blumel's 'Book of Hours (c. 1492) hand painted on vellum and a Japanese brush drawing and text for a children's book by Sadalude (1807-1873).

Also on display will be two boxed portfolios by the noted bay area artist and educator Robert Nugent, a paper bound portfolio "It's About Time" by Karl Kasten, UC Berkeley faculty emeritus and long time colleague of Janet Turner's, and the intaglio book "Some Birds" by Sue Richardson, a former student of Turner's.

And last but not least, be sure to see the broadsheet collaborations with poetry and original prints by California poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti and artist/poet Robert Hershon, works never before seen at CSU, Chico and on loan from the Meriam Library's Special Collection.

The Turner (www.theturner.org) hours are weekdays from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. For more information or to make arrangements for group tours, please call the museum office at 530-898-4476 or email csullivan@exchange.csuchico.edu.
